by Quynh Vo, local birder and Rock Point bird walk leader

I led my first bird walk at Rock Point this past Saturday! The participants were such sweet people who made my first walk so enjoyable. One of the birdwatchers even had a DSLR with an extended lens and the photos they took of the Dark-eyed Juncos were spectacular.

It's been a while since I've led a naturalist walk and I was excited to finally start leading them again. Wildlife conservation has always been a passion of mine and birding was one of the few ways I felt like I was able to fully immerse myself in nature and truly connect with wildlife. Learning how to identify the thousands of bird plumages and calls feels like a fun trivia game every time.

I spent a few years leading naturalist walks prior to this job and had a strong desire to lead them again because of the amazing people I'd meet every single expedition. Birding is one of those activities that is not only healthy, but it builds community and is accessible. I hope more people partake in this hobby and know that resources are always available if they need them!

I like birding at Rock Point specifically because of the species I find here that I struggle to find anywhere else. This was the only place I've ever seen a Black-and-White Warbler! In the summer, Rock Point has a gorgeous meadow that blooms with biodiversity, and I love just sitting by it watching the birds come and go. I look forward to my next bird walk and am excited to meet new people (and species)!

Join us for our weekly bird walk series to see the amazing birds that visit Rock Point!

Meet at Rock Point Center, located at 20 Rock Point Road in Burlington at 10am. Please expect each event to end around 12:00pm but birders are welcome to leave early or stay as long as they'd like!

Please dress for the weather and feel free to bring any resources you’d like (ID books, binoculars, other tools including your smartphone - Merlin and iNaturalist are wonderful apps to use for birding.) We will have a few binoculars available and other resources available if needed.
